In February, firefighters with the Esquimalt Fire Rescue (EFRS) were kept busy with numerous situations, including a dog rescue and an apartment fire.
Just last Friday, February 21st, firefighters were called to deal with a situation in which a young puppy had fallen into the cold waters of the Gorge Waterway.
EFRS says Cassie, a 6-year-old puppy, fell off a walkway into the cold waters and became trapped.
Firefighters had to use a ladder to lower someone down into the waters to safely secure the dog and carried her up the steep bank.
To warm up the pup, firefighters used thermal blankets to avoid her contracting hypothermia.
Once she was cleared for safety factors, Cassie was reunited with her owner. EFRS says although she was visibly shaken and chilled, Cassie is unharmed.
Another notable situation EFRS handled earlier this month was a significant structure fire at Nelson Lodge Apartments, 1337 Saunders Street.
EFRS says they were able to quickly reduce the blaze to the unit of origin within the building, though many other units suffered smoke and water damage.
They added that no injuries were reported as the building was unoccupied.
During this incident, firefighters rescued another dog who had been suffering from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters at the scene provided the dog with specialized K-9 artificial respiration and prompt CPR, and made sure the pup was immediately taken to be cared for by a veterinarian.
This dog too was returned home to its owner and is doing well, according to EFRS.
