Just as the Canucks were set to face the Dallas Stars, a major shake-up hit the team.
The club has traded forward JT Miller to the New York Rangers amid reports of ongoing locker room tensions and reduced ice time—factors reportedly linked to friction with teammate Elias Pettersson.
The 31-year-old centre, standing 6‑foot‑1, has tallied nine goals and 35 points in 40 games this season.
Now in the second year of a seven‑year, $56‑million deal (with an $8-million cap hit) and set to hit unrestricted free agency after the 2029‑30 season, Miller recorded a career‑high 37 goals and 103 points last year, helping lead the Canucks to a 50‑23‑9 record and a Pacific Division title.
Drafted 15th overall by the Rangers in 2011, he has since amassed 246 goals and 668 points in 833 career games across several teams.
The Canucks also sent two defencemen to the Rangers, Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington.
In return, Vancouver will receive forward Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini, and a top‑13 protected first‑round pick in 2025 (which converts to an unprotected pick in 2026 if it lands within the top 13).
Chytil, 25, from Czechia, has contributed 11 goals and nine assists in 41 games for the Rangers this season, while 22‑year‑old rookie Mancini, a Michigan native selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, has shown promise with one goal and four assists in 15 NHL games, plus three goals and seven assists in 23 AHL contests.
This blockbuster trade marks a turning point for the Canucks as they look to mend internal issues and rebuild, while the Rangers bolster their forward depth with Miller’s arrival.
