Get ready, Vancouver Island—winter is making its entrance!
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of a mix of snow, rain, and freezing temperatures across the south coast, including Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
The action kicks off Thursday afternoon as a low-pressure system moves in, bringing steady precipitation. With freezing levels starting off low, wet snow is expected at higher elevations, with up to 5 cm possible by Friday morning.
But don’t get too excited (or concerned) just yet—by Friday, temperatures will rise, and most areas will see a switch to plain old rain.
However, the weekend could get interesting.
Cold Arctic air is set to push in, mixing with Pacific moisture and bringing a good chance of accumulating snow in several areas. Exact snowfall amounts are still uncertain, but warnings will be issued as needed.
By early next week, things take another turn as a ridge of high pressure settles in, ushering in dry but bitterly cold air. Outflow winds will likely make it feel even chillier, so brace yourself for a deep winter snap.
Whether you’re a snow lover or not, it’s time to dig out the warm jackets, check on the snow tires, and stock up on hot chocolate—winter is officially arriving on Vancouver Island!
