Saanich Police investigating after middle school children invited into stranger’s vehicle

Saanich Police have launched an investigation after a group of Colquitz Middle School students were approached by a stranger who invited them into his vehicle. 

The incident occurred on the morning of January 16th when a driver approached the students and verbally invited them to get in his vehicle. 

Police say the students did not enter the vehicle and reported the incident to school staff, who then contacted the Saanich Police Department.

Investigators located the vehicle and spoke with the driver shortly after the school reported the incident. 

The driver was not arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

Colquitz Middle School collaborated with police to send an external communication letter to parents and guardians following this incident. 

Saanich Police say they want to take this opportunity to remind parents and students to report suspicious or concerning activity to either police, schools or parents.

They encourage parents and guardians to discuss safety tips with their children regarding what to do if approached by a stranger. 

Police recommend children be aware of their surroundings, never go somewhere with a stranger, always notify a parent or another trusted adult of what happened right away and plan their route to and from school, walking in groups when possible. 

Additionally, police say children should be empowered to trust their instincts and feelings. If someone makes them feel uncomfortable or if they feel like something’s just not right, they should walk away immediately and notify a trusted adult.

Lastly, it is always recommended that children communicate with family or friends where they are going and when they will be back, making sure to inform a trusted individual if they will be delayed or if plans change.
