Egg-lovers in Canada may want to check their fridges before breakfast.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for several brands of eggs in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and possibly other provinces and territories due to potential salmonella contamination.
The affected brands include Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, no name, and Western Family. The expiry dates for the recalled eggs are February 16th, February 22nd, and March 1st, 2025.
The CFIA advises that the recalled products should not be consumed, served, or distributed. Instead, consumers should dispose of the eggs or contact the retailer where they were purchased for further instructions.
While salmonella-contaminated food might not look or smell spoiled, it can still pose serious health risks.
Symptoms of salmonella infection for otherwise healthy individuals include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. However, the infection can be more severe—and even life-threatening—for young children, pregnant women, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.
For anyone who has purchased eggs from the listed brands, it’s time to err on the side of caution.
The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
When in doubt, throw it out!
