Here’s how you can celebrate Lunar New Year in and around Victoria

Victoria, there’s a very special celebration coming your way and you’re encouraged to soak in as much as possible!

Lunar New Year—also known as the Spring Festival—falls on Wednesday, January 29th this year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Snake.

Whether you celebrate with family at home, immerse yourself in activities around town, or haven’t done either and would like to start, we wanted to highlight a few of the upcoming events to provide you with some ideas!

So, without further ado, here’s how you can participate in Lunar New Year events happening in and around Victoria:

Victoria Royals: Lunar New Year Celebration

Not only will you be catching some epic local hockey, you’ll also get the chance to take part in one of the many Lunar New Year Celebrations happening in Victoria!

The Victoria Royals team encourages everyone to attend, where guests will witness lion dancers, local artists, live music from Live music from Max Mackrill, and more as they play the Kamloops Blazers.

The Royals will also be wearing custom jerseys that are pretty ssssslick—just like a snake! They’re available for auction online.

Plus, early fans will receive a lucky red envelope with the chance to win a variety of prizes, including the grand prize of a suite for a future game. Other prizes include Dominos coupons, Royals toque from the team store, signed Royals jersey and more.

Victoria Chinatown Museum

From Wednesday, January 29th to Wednesday, February 12th, the Victoria Chinatown Museum will be offering a wonderful variety of festive celebration in Fan Tan Alley!

Don’t miss the launch of their new Lunar New Year LEGO exhibit, which opens on Tuesday, January 28th and runs until the end of February.

While you’re there, make sure you participate in their scavenger hunt and see how many hidden treasures you can find within the exhibit.

  • When: Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Victoria Chinatown Lioness Lions Club Annual New Year Dinner 

Note that this event is currently sold out, but a waitlist option is available!

The Victoria Chinatown Lioness Lions Club is hosting their annual Lunar New Year dinner at Don Mee Seafood Restaurant on February 8th.

They’re offering 10 courses of delicious Chinese cuisine and the Lion Dancers will be present as well!

Tickets are $88 per person, and you can put yourself on the waitlist here.

Lunar New Year Parade

Presented by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, everyone is invited to celebrate the Year of the Snake in Canada’s oldest Chinatown, right here in Victoria!

The festivities will kick off at the Gates of Harmonious Interest with an eight-lion performance by the Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club, a dragon dance by the Victoria Chinese Public School and traditional Chinese dances.

The parade will go from the 500 block of Fisgard Street to the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and Chinese Public School at 636 Fisgard Street.
