Canada’s favourite holiday tradition is set to make its highly anticipated return with the 2025 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship kicking off this Boxing Day in Ottawa.
The annual tournament promises thrilling action, national pride, and redemption as veteran head coach Dave Cameron leads Team Canada on a quest for glory.
Hockey Canada turned to Cameron after last year’s shocking fifth-place finish in Sweden, where Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals in stunning fashion.
Determined to restore the nation’s status as a hockey powerhouse, Cameron has a talented roster eager to deliver on home ice.
Brayden Yager will captain Canada’s National Junior Team, alongside alternate captains Tanner Molendyk and Calum Ritchie.
“I am honoured to be named captain of Team Canada for the World Juniors on a team with so many great leaders, and I am excited for our group to take the ice in Ottawa and continue working towards our goal of winning a gold medal on home ice,” Yager said.
“Tanner and Calum are great players and teammates that are deserving of this honour, and I look forward to serving on the leadership group with them and wearing the Maple Leaf with pride in front of Canadian fans.”
Pre-tournament action has already set the stage for an exciting championship. Canada dominated Switzerland 7-1 on Thursday and followed up with a solid 4-2 victory against Sweden on Saturday night at TD Place. Their final exhibition game is set for Monday against Czechia, giving fans one last glimpse of the team before the stakes rise.
The tournament officially begins on Thursday, December 26th, with Canada taking on Finland at the Canadian Tire Centre at 4:30 p.m. PST. The action continues the following evening when Canada faces Latvia at the same time.
After a day of rest, they’ll meet Germany on Sunday, December 29th, once again at 4:30 p.m. The preliminary round concludes with the much-anticipated New Year’s Eve showdown against the United States at 4:30 p.m. PST, a tradition that draws millions.
Once the preliminary round wraps up, the playoff schedule kicks into gear. Quarterfinals take place on Thursday, January 2nd, followed by semifinals on Saturday, January 4th. The championship game is slated for Sunday, January 5th at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the bronze medal game at 3:30 p.m.
With representation from all seven Canadian NHL teams and a lineup filled with budding stars, the 2025 World Juniors promise to be a must-watch event. Will Canada reclaim its throne and make this a holiday to remember?
TSN and RDS will once again provide coverage of the event, broadcasting all 29 tournament games and all three Team Canada pre-tournament games.
