‘From Warhol to Banksy’ exhibition now open at Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

Share

This December and beyond, you’re invited to view works of art that define the Pop Art movement and highlight the careers of some of the art world’s most iconic figures.

The From Warhol to Banksy exhibition officially kicked off at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on December 14th, welcoming visitors to enjoy the whimsical displays.

From Warhol to Banksy is curated by Kelowna Art Gallery Curator, Christine May and features works by artists Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Takashi Murakami, Banksy, and Mr. Brainwash.

Pop Art has always been known for its commentary on consumerism, social consciousness, and, more recently, activism—and is no longer just a phenomenon of the 1960s.

The evolution of Pop Art, from Andy Warhol’s infamous Marilyn Monroe screen prints, which are included in the exhibition, to Banksy’s guerilla street art, have completely blurred the lines between high and low art.

Through a selection of prints, paintings, sculpture, and ephemera, art gallery visitors will see first-hand how Pop Art continues to critique our world and challenges us to think about the issues that persist in our everyday life.

From Warhol to Banksy, which runs through April 27th, 2025, features over 75 works and is complemented by a selection of works drawn from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s Permanent Collection

Plus, in celebration of this new and exciting exhibition, we’ve partnered with AGGV to give away a prize package that includes two Gallery passes and more! You’ll find those contest details below.

“Many of the works adopt a satirical, tongue-in-cheek look at the way consumerism has shaped our world. This is an exciting exhibition and an outstanding opportunity to see works by major international artists, on loan from a private collection, right here in Victoria,” said AGGV Chief Curator & Director of Collections and Exhibitions, Steven McNeil.

The AGGV will also feature the first Victoria screening of the 2017 HBO documentary Brillo Box (3 ¢ off), written and directed by Lisanne Skylar, playing in the Gallery’s Drury Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

Blending humorous personal narrative with Pop Art history, the film follows an Andy Warhol sculpture as it makes its way from a New York family’s living room to a record-breaking Christie’s auction, exploring the ephemeral nature of art and value, and the decisions that shape family history.

Brillo Box (3¢ off) was an official selection of the 54th New York Film Festival and short-listed for an Academy Award in the Best Documentary (short subject) category.
