This weekend, the Vic Theatre is hosting a 24-hour Batman film marathon in which they will screen nine movies that feature the dark knight.
And this isn’t just a chance for Batman fans to over-indulge themselves either—the Vic Theatre will be giving away a full year’s worth of free movies to anyone who can stay awake for the full 24-hour marathon.
“It’s a contest where basically, if you can survive the marathon, you could win a year pass to the Vic Theatre,” said Mark Hoyne, Program Manager at the Vic Theatre.
He stipulated that the year’s pass is just for regular screenings and not for special events.
“It’s basically the equivalent of around 150 films throughout the year,” Hoyne told Victoria Buzz.
The Batman films that will be shown during the 24-hour marathon are as follows:
- The Batman (2022) – 10 a.m., Saturday, November 9th
- Batman Begins (2005) – 1:10 p.m., Saturday, November 9th
- The Dark Knight (2008) – 3:45 p.m., Saturday, November 9th
- The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – 7:17 p.m., Saturday, November 9th
- Batman (1989) – 10:16 p.m. – Saturday, November 9th
- Batman Returns (1992) – 12:37 a.m., Sunday, November 10th
- Batman Forever (1995) – 3:18 a.m., Sunday, November 10th
- Batman & Robin (1997) – 5:55 a.m., Sunday November 10th
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) – 8:15 a.m., Sunday November 10th
Hoyne promised Victoria Buzz there was no malicious intent in the planning of the sequence of movies being shown.
“It was either end with the animated movie or end with the three-hour one, the longest of all the Batman films,” he laughed.
Rules and prizes
As for the rules of this contest, there are a handful of important ones.
Attendees must be there for all nine Batman films, and they cannot be caught asleep at any point during the 24-hour period.
Additionally, attendees are not allowed to leave the theatre and except for a one-hour break which has been pre-determined by the theatre—this includes not being allowed to leave the theatre to smoke or vape.
“We will have an eye on the scene and basically we have this rule where it’s the ‘double wave’. If we wave in front of your face twice and you don’t wake up then you get your pass punched and it says you’re disqualified,” Hoyne explained.
However, those who fall asleep and get disqualified are still allowed to stay, watch the rest of the movies and enjoy all the Batman they can, just with less pressure to stay awake the whole time.
In the 15-minute breaks between all the films, Hoyne says there will be prizes given away which include comic books from his own personal collection, a gift card to both Curious Comics, a gift card to Cherry Bomb Toys and more.
“My favourite thing that’s being given away are the McDonald’s cups from the 90s,” Hoyne said.
“The crystal, bring out the good crystal Batman cup,” he laughed.
There will also be sandwiches for sale so the attendees aren’t just surviving on popcorn alone for 24-hours and they will be selling Hoyne ‘Dark Knight Matter’ at the concession, along with a lot of coffee for those who need it to stay up.
The 24-hour marathon costs $75 per person, but would be well worth the price if people are up for the challenge. A year’s pass is worth up to just under $2,000 in value.
