The windstorm that hit Vancouver Island earlier this week knocked out power to thousands of residents and another wind storm is expected to impact some regions on Friday.
The aftermath of the storm which struck the island between Tuesday and Wednesday this week knocked out power for around 150,000 at its peak, and as of this publication, there are still over 26,000 BC Hydro customers who have been left in the dark.
These 26,000 without power are being impacted by 287 power outages, which BC Hydro says are being restored as fast as possible by all available crews.
As of Thursday, November 21st, Environment Canada has issued yet another weather statement, warning of a subsequent low pressure system that will affect Vancouver Island.
“Another fall storm is forecast to impact Vancouver Island and the BC south coast on Friday,” wrote Environment Canada in a special weather statement.
“An area of low pressure will deepen off the Washington coast tonight. This low is forecast to move northwards and approach Vancouver Island on Friday.”
Southeasterly winds will increase through the day on Friday, with peak wind speeds expected for most areas during the afternoon and evening. These strong winds will ease Friday night or early Saturday.
The national weather authority added that this looming storm will not be as intense as the major storm that affected the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Peak wind speeds are forecasted to be lower, but the strong winds may still cause damages and disruptions, and slow down clean up efforts.
In Greater Victoria, winds are expected to reach up to 70 km/h, while along the western coast in Port Renfrew, gusts may reach up to 90 km/h.
Environment Canada says that they are uncertain of the track this storm will take and the intensity with which it will impact Vancouver Island.
“A track closer to or across Vancouver Island will result in stronger winds. Wind warnings may be issued,” wrote Environment Canada.
Vancouver Islanders are being warned to expect the strong winds to down trees or cause tree limbs to break, cause power outages and travel delays may be possible.
