Campbell River RCMP have launched an investigation after several ‘Red Dress’ memorials were removed or damaged along the Inland Island Highway.
They believe this reported property damage and vandalism was committed by an individual or group and are seeking assistance from the public in their investigation into the matter.
Red Dresses such as the ones that were vandalized were put up to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Two Spirit People.
Police say the most recent instance of Red Dress vandalism took place overnight on November 24th, just south of Campbell River at the intersection of Highway 19 and the airport main overpass.
According to Campbell River RCMP, a number of the painted wooden dresses at that location were torn down and destroyed.
“Multiple people have put their time, money and heart into making these dresses,” said Cst. Maury Tyre.
“We are asking anyone who may have knowledge regarding those responsible for damaging the dresses to contact the police.”
