Another weather alert has been issued by Environment Canada, warning residents of Greater Victoria and other regions across Vancouver Island to brace for high winds and heavy rain as a potent storm approaches the south coast.
The special weather statement, in effect for Greater Victoria, west Vancouver Island, inland Vancouver Island, east Vancouver Island, and the southern Gulf Islands, signals that severe weather will begin overnight Sunday and continue through Monday.
The storm is expected to bring a short but intense episode of heavy rainfall, especially impacting the mountainous terrain of West Vancouver Island.
Peak rainfall will likely occur after midnight on Sunday and continue into early Monday morning.
Current estimates suggest that areas with the highest elevation could receive up to 70-100 mm of rainfall, while other parts of the Island will see lesser, but still significant, amounts.
Alongside the rain, strong south-to-southeast winds are forecast to develop by Monday morning.
These winds will shift westward, intensifying as they spread.
In particular, certain inland valleys oriented west-to-east may experience especially high gusts, posing risks for localized damage.
Environment Canada is urging residents to clear leaves and debris from storm drains to prevent localized flooding, especially near rivers, creeks, and culverts where the risk of washouts may be elevated.
They also advise people to prepare for potential power outages, as high winds could lead to broken branches and downed power lines.
