Lovers of Christmas lights and the holiday spirit, it’s nearly time!
This year marks the 42nd annual Peninsula Co-op Santa Claus Parade, so slap on your toque and mitts and get downtown to witness the glory of all of the lights and decorations.
For those that haven’t attended before, the parade will be a dazzling display of festive floats, cheerful performers, and a whole lot of holiday spirit—perfect for the whole family.
Parade organizers anticipate an audience of around 50,000 in the downtown core, and around 40,000 watching it live on television!
If you’re a lover of details and are hoping to be ultra organized for the parade this year, we’ve compiled a list of 5 things that you should know leading up to the big event:
Date and Time
The parade will take place on Saturday, November 30th at 5 p.m., and features approximately 85 magnificently crafted floats awaiting your ready eyes—that’s over 20 new entries compared to last year!
It’s said to be the biggest Santa Claus Parade yet, with over 2,000 participants all working together to bring attendees a night of magic and wonder.
Road Closures
For those planning to attend, road closures will begin at the parliament building around 3 p.m. to allow for marshalling, so be sure to plan ahead if you’re driving into the downtown area.
Parade organizers are asking everyone to avoid Wharf and Douglas Street in particular.
See below for the roads that will be closed off for the parade.
The Parade Route
The parade will kick off at the corner of Government Street and Belleville Street, and make its way through downtown Victoria, following a route that heads north along Government Street, turns east on Humboldt Street, and continues up Douglas Street, dispersing at the Victoria Public Market.
These roads will be unavailable to general traffic during this time to ensure the parade runs smoothly.
Additional Treats and Details
Food bank: The Mustard Seed Street Church and Food Bank will be accepting food donations and cash contributions during the event.
Hot chocolate: To warm up those chilly winter nights, the Mustard Seed will be handing out free hot chocolate at Douglas and Humboldt starting at 4:30 p.m.
Santa photos: After the parade, make your way to Centennial Square for an opportunity to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. They’ll be available for pictures by donation. It’s the perfect way to cap off an evening of fun and holiday cheer.
Lights of Wonder
The Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) will also be kicking off their Lights of Wonder celebration on the same night, bringing the holiday lights to life in Centennial Square.
The square will be beautifully illuminated, making it the perfect spot for a family outing. So grab the kids, bundle up, and come enjoy the festive lights that will brighten up your evening!
