Nothing like a full moon to get you in the Halloween spirit!
The next full moon is known as the ‘Hunter’s Moon,’ and will peak in the early morning hours on Thursday, October 17th.
The moon will appear full for about three days, so we’ll have from Tuesday evening through Friday morning to soak it in.
According to NASA, the Hunter’s Moon is also a supermoon, making it the third of four consecutive supermoons—and the brightest by a tiny margin.
A supermoon occurs when a new or full moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, making it appear the biggest and brightest compared to other full moons!
The earliest documented use of the term Hunter’s Moon is from 1710, and it represents the hunting season.
Similar to the other moons, it has a different meaning and significance across various cultures.
As recognized by the Algonquin tribes, the October moon is also known as the ‘Travel Moon,’ the ‘Dying Grass Moon,’ or the ‘Sanguine’ or ‘Blood Moon.’
NASA states that some sources link it to the turning of leaves and dying back of plants as the fall progresses, as well as hunting to prepare for the winter.
For Buddhists, the October moon marks the end of Vassa, which is a three-month period of fasting for monks tied to the monsoons.
For Hindus, this is Sharad Purnima and is celebrated with many harvest festivals.
