Exciting news for water lovers: Saanich Commonwealth Place is set to make a splash with a brand-new, modern waterslide, scheduled for installation in 2025.
The current waterslide, which has been around since 1993, is ready for an upgrade.
After evaluating reports from engineers and the manufacturer, the District of Saanich has concluded that a replacement is needed.
Later this month, they will begin the process by releasing a request for proposals for the new slide. With plans to add exciting features and potentially lower the height requirements, Saanich is aiming to ensure even more people can join in on the fun!
In the meantime, the existing waterslide will remain out of service until it is replaced. During this period, the facility will continue to offer a wide range of alternative activities to keep patrons entertained and active.
The new waterslide is expected to be installed during the facility’s annual maintenance closure in Fall 2025.
While the usual maintenance closure lasts about two weeks, the demolition and installation of the new waterslide are projected to take approximately six weeks.
The District plans to take advantage of this extended aquatic closure by completing additional capital projects around the facility at the same time.
To minimize the impact on pool users, staff aim to reopen some pools after the standard two-week closure, allowing high performance users and the general public to continue enjoying other areas of the aquatic facility.
The main facility, along with its dryland programs, will return to regular operations after the initial two weeks.
Originally constructed to host the aquatic events for the 1994 Commonwealth Games, the Saanich Commonwealth Place quickly became a staple for residents, offering a mix of recreation, fitness, and community activities.
With an awesome aquatic centre that includes a competition-sized pool, a leisure pool, and plenty of family-friendly features, the facility was built to have something for everyone.
