Last week a deer was attacked in Oak Bay by a dog who was illegally off-leash.
Oak Bay Police say that on October 5th, at approximately 12:10 p.m., they received a report of an off-leash dog attacking a deer near Monterey Avenue and Brighton Avenue.
Police attended the area and found that the deer that was attacked suffered a significant wound to its leg.
They added it was able to run away following the attack.
In Oak Bay, dogs are required to be leashed at all times, except when in Windsor Park, the municipality’s sole off-leash dog park.
Furthermore the District requires leashes be no more than 8 feet in length, meaning retractable leashes are prohibited.
Police called Victoria Animal Control Services to the scene and issued the dog’s owner several tickets as well as a dangerous dog notice.
Dangerous dogs are required by Victoria Animal Control Services to be muzzled and leashed at all times.
If a dog considered dangerous is not muzzled or leashed, it can be impounded and held for up to 14 days.
