The BC NDP have officially beaten the Conservative Party of BC and have formed a majority government with 47 seats.
Ever since election day on Saturday, October 19th, the final results have been uncertain up until this weekend when recounts, absentee vote counts and final counts were conducted.
Prior to the weekend, the BC Conservatives and the BC NDP were neck-and-neck with 40 confirmed elected seats apiece.
There were 11 electoral districts that were too close to declare a winner before additional counts could be done. The BC NDP led in six of those and the BC Conservatives led in five.
As of Monday, October 28th, the BC NDP have secured another seven seats, putting them at 47 and the BC Conservatives have secured just four more, putting them at 44.
This gave the BC NDP the majority government they were hoping for and the BC Conservatives will act as the official opposition with 44 seats.
Some speculate that even though the BC NDP secured a majority, they will still collaborate with the BC Green Party.
In the past, the BC NDP have won a minority government and teamed up with the BC Greens, signing a supply and confidence deal to aid them in forming a coalition government of sorts, overpowering the opposition.
The BC Greens have been successfully elected in two ridings, but say they will not speak to the possibility of an alliance with the BC NDP until the final results have been announced.
Despite the outcome, one more round of recounts must now take place in two ridings: Surrey-Guildford and Courtenay-Comox.
Elections BC says that, if the difference between the top two candidates is less than 1/500th of the total ballots, an automatic judicial recount must occur.
In Kelowna Centre, the BC Conservatives won by 38 votes, and in Surrey-Guildford, the BC NDP won by 27 votes.
These recounts are overseen by a supreme court justice and the deadline for the results are November 4th.
