Westshore RCMP are asking for public assistance in identifying the thief who stole three pieces of driftwood art in Colwood’s Esquimalt Lagoon.
Police believe the theft took place sometime over the last month, but only received a report of the theft on October 17th; however, the thefts may not have taken place on the same day.
The three driftwood art sculptures that were taken included a kingfisher, a squirrel and hummingbird. Police added that a fourth driftwood sculpture, in the form of an owl, was damaged.
The works of art had been put on display for the public to enjoy at the behest of the artist, Paul Lewis, who created them along with several other pieces of driftwood art.
“Well that’s a little heartbreaking,” wrote Lewis.
He added that the hummingbird was stolen earlier in the month, while the squirrel and kingfisher were taken sometime between October 16th and 17th.
This is not the first time Lewis’ driftwood art has been stolen from Esquimalt Lagoon. In March 2023, he had a woodpecker stolen and another piece vandalized.
“Keep your eyes peeled. They usually end up being tossed out somewhere,” Lewis concluded.
West Shore RCMP say they are continuing this investigation and ask that anyone with information, contact West Shore RCMP at (250) 474-2264.
