Wildfire near Mount Arrowsmith now ‘being held’ as firefighters work to control the blaze

A wildfire was discovered near Mount Arrowsmith and deemed to be out of control by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) on Sunday, September 22nd. 

As of 1:33 p.m. on Monday, September 23rd, the wildfire has ceased expansion and has been updated to the status of ‘being held’, thanks to the response efforts of BCWS firefighters. 

Currently, the blaze is estimated to be around 1.14 hectares in size and is located near the base of Mount Arrowsmith, around 13.5 kilometres from Qualicum Beach and 11 kilometres from Coombs. 

According to BCWS, the blaze is not threatening, as it is in a remote area.

“It is estimated to be one hectare in size and may be visible from the Vancouver Island corridors,” said BCWS. 

“Two BC Wildfire Initial Attack crews, one Unit crew and a Response Officer are responding to this fire. MOSAIC is also responding with three water tenders and personnel.”

Mosaic Forest Management is the company that manages the land this fire is located on. They manage the property for TimerWest Forest Corp., who harvest BC lumber on Vancouver Island.

Fines for starting a wildfire in BC can range between $100,000 and $1 million, along with a potential one year sentence in prison. 

As of this publication, there are 118 active wildfires throughout BC.
