The University of Victoria (UVic) is urging people in the area to remain vigilant following two possible cougar sightings on campus.
The first sighting was reported around 8 p.m. on Saturday near parking lot 10, close to Gordon Head Road, according to a notice posted on UVic’s website.
A second sighting occurred near parking lot 1, on a path towards Cedar Hill Road, around 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 29th.
This time of year often brings occasional cougar sightings on campus, and UVic wants to ensure that everyone knows how to stay safe in such situations.
“While cougars are generally shy and elusive animals and rarely attack humans, a hungry cougar may come into contact with people during its search for food, usually in the hours between dusk and dawn when cougars are most active,” said UVic.
The university recommends staying in groups, keeping pets on a leash, and making noise to avoid surprising a cougar. If you do encounter one, it’s important to remain calm, maintain eye contact, and back away slowly while giving the animal space.

Anyone who spots a cougar on campus is asked to contact campus security at 250-721-7599. Additionally, sightings can be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BC COS).
