RCMP are reminding residents to lock their doors after a home break-in occurred while a family was inside sleeping.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 15th on Farrar Road in rural Cedar between the hours of 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., where thieves gained access to the rural property via their unlocked front door.

According to the homeowner, he and his son arrived home sometime after 1 a.m. and they both went to bed shortly after.

When they awoke in the morning, they discovered that numerous items were missing from their kitchen and their vehicle was missing from their driveway.

The stolen vehicle, a grey BMW X5, was used to carry away the stolen items, including a new set of Tour Edge Exotics men’s golf clubs, a backpack containing a computer, keys, a wallet, his wife’s purse and a small amount of cash.

Police say there was an airtag in the backpack, which was tracked to Parksville but stopped tracking soon after.

At around 2 a.m., the stolen credit cards were allegedly used to purchase gas at a nearby gas bar—the homeowners have since cancelled their cards.

“This was certainly a wake up call for them. They admitted that they had become somewhat complacent over the years as nothing had ever been stolen from their property, let alone having items taken from their home,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“The next day they made sure that all of their doors and windows were locked before they retired for the evening.”

If anyone has information on this incident or the whereabouts of the stolen items, call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
