The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia has launched an investigation into the arrest of a woman by Nanaimo RCMP officers on the evening of September 26th.
The incident occurred after police responded to a wellbeing check for the woman, who was reportedly in distress and believed to be in violation of a release order.
According to information released by the police, officers responded to a call around 9 p.m. over concerns that the woman might be threatening self-harm. After locating her, RCMP proceeded with the arrest and transported her to the local detachment.
While attempting to move the woman into a cell at the station, an altercation occurred, resulting in the woman sustaining an injury. Emergency Health Services were called to the scene, and the woman was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it took place and began an investigation. The early stages of the investigation will focus on confirming the nature and extent of the woman’s injuries and assessing whether police actions or inactions contributed to the injury, according to the police watchdog.
The IIO is requesting assistance from anyone with relevant video footage or information about the event. Individuals are encouraged to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or provide information through the contact form available on the IIO BC website.
