Another long-standing business in Duncan has been destroyed by fire.
On Thursday, September 12th, just after noon, a fire erupted in a century-old building on Kenneth Street, causing significant damage and destroying a local business.
Fabrications, a clothing store that has been a staple in the community since its opening in 1984, was housed in the historic building, which is believed to have been constructed around 1901.
Photos and video from the scene captured the massive flames that billowed out of the upper portion of the building, as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze.
Smoke was seen pouring out from the second-floor apartment door, flowing onto the deck above the merchant’s shop. Kenneth Street was subsequently closed to traffic to allow emergency crews to battle the fire.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but employees watched in dismay as the building and their business succumbed to the flames.
This is the second major fire in Duncan this year that has resulted in the loss of a local business. Earlier, in February, a suspicious fire destroyed the Good Neighbours Thrift Store on York Street.
The incident took place just before 1 a.m. on February 10th.
The cause of the latest fire remains under investigation, as the community comes to terms with the devastating loss of another long-standing local business.
“Our hearts go out to Jane and the Fabrications family today. We are heartbroken for your loss and happy everyone made it out safely. Thank you to the Duncan Fire Department, and the incredible support of the North Cowichan and Cowichan Bay fire crews, who worked together to fight and contain this tragic fire. We are extremely grateful for your service, courage, and hard work,” said Duncan Mayor Michelle Staples.
No details have been released on the cause of the fire.
