Survey shows most British Columbians see their political views as being ‘centre’

A recent survey of British Columbians and people from all across Canada, shows that most voters see their personal politics as being ‘centric’.

According to this survey, 33% of BC voters see themselves as being in the centre of the political spectrum as a provincial election approaches quickly and a federal election is slated for next year.

When it comes to being just off ‘centre’ on the spectrum, the exact same amount of people (17%) said their views are either ‘centre left’ or ‘centre right’.

However, once out of the centre, one side of the spectrum starts to show more people admitting to their political values than the other.

The survey says that 10% of BC respondents say their views are ‘left’ and 4% say they are ‘extreme left’.

Meanwhile, 8% of the respondents say they are ‘right’ on the political spectrum and only 1% claim to be ‘extreme right’.

Of the federal political parties, the majority of Canadian respondents place them on the political spectrum accordingly:

  • Liberal Party – left (17%)
  • Conservative Party – right (24%)
  • NDP – left (21%)
  • Bloc Québécois – centre (15%)
  • Green Party – centre (19%)
  • People’s Party – extreme right (17%)

Of note, many respondents replied to the survey saying they were unsure of where specific parties were rooted in the political spectrum.

For the Bloc Québécois, the Green Party and the People’s Party, more people said they were unsure of the party’s stance than those who responded with a confident answer.

The survey was conducted by BC-based Research Co., a data analysis firm.
