New ‘out of control’ wildfire discovered just west of Nanaimo airport

Share

A new wildfire was discovered just west of the Vancouver Island Airport near Nanaimo.

The blaze has been dubbed the White Rapids wildfire by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and it is believed to be relatively small at around 0.6 hectares.

It is around four kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway along the Nanaimo River.

Regardless of its size, the fire is still deemed to be ‘out of control’ because the wildfire is spreading or is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line.

According to BCWS, there are currently three firefighters, one “operational resource” and one helicopter battling the blaze.

Human activity is suspected to be the cause of this wildfire.

More to come as BCWS monitors and battles this wildfire.
