According to census data from Statistics Canada (StatCan), more people in Victoria and Halifax bike or walk on their daily commutes than anywhere else in Canada.
StatCan says that on the whole, commuters who mainly take active transportation have remained essentially unchanged since 2021, with 6.0% of commuters walking or biking to work in May 2024.
Across the country, this level of active transportation commuters remains lower than pre-pandemic numbers. In May 2016, 7.1% of commuters rode or walked to work.
Despite those stats, active transportation is up in Victoria with around 18.7% of the population riding or walking on their commutes, according to StatCan.
Halifax was next in line with 12.3%riding or walking. StatCan says this may potentially be driven by the smaller size and milder climate of these cities.

Aside from those taking the shoelace express, StatCan says that around 81.5% of Canadians are commuting to work via car, truck, van or some other kind of personal vehicle.
They added that 89.5% of the commuters who took a car, truck or van to work were alone in their vehicle.
In Victoria, the percentage of people who commute in a personal vehicle by themselves is much higher than the national average, at 92.4%.
Edmonton is the only city who has more commuters driving alone than Victoria with a percentage of 92.8%.
