Jewish activists in Victoria calling on local MPs to push for arms embargo against Israel

Tuesday, August 20th has been dubbed a ‘day of action’ in which Canadians of all backgrounds are being encouraged to call on the federal government for an official arms embargo against Israel.

In Victoria, the group Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) says they are joining this call for a national day of action demanding a total end to arms exports and imports between Canada and Israel.

The day of action initiative was started by Arms Embargo Now Canada, a group dedicated to educating Canadians about how they can aid in bringing about a ceasefire in Gaza, which continues to be bombarded by Israeli forces.

The organization also endeavours in combating misinformation regarding exactly what weapons and components are being traded between Canada and Israel.

Because August 20th is a day of action in this cause, IJV Victoria will be holding a demonstration at Scotiabank on Douglas and Yates Streets, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The call is to contact members of parliament asking them to endorse the call for a complete and immediate halt to weapons from Canada to the genocidal Israeli state,” wrote an IJV Victoria spokesperson in a media release.

“Victoria MP Laura Collins has signed, but other MPs, including Esquimalt, Saanich, Sooke MP Randall Garrison, have not.”

IJV Victoria say they are holding this demonstration outside Scotiabank as a way to call on the bank to divest entirely from Elbit Systems, an Israel weapons maker.

In addition to attending the demonstration, Arms Embargo Now Canada is calling on Canadians to contact their MPs to call for this embargo on a governmental level in the House of Commons.
