Nanaimo RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying an arson suspect after a fire was lit in an alleyway last weekend.

On Saturday, July 27th at around 9:30 a.m., the suspect was seen starting a fire in an alleyway behind 100 Nicol Street and it was captured on a nearby surveillance camera.

The individual captured on camera is shown walking into the alleyway and then setting fire to a bag of garbage that was next to a fence before walking away.

Residents in the area are said to have spotted the smoke and used a garden hose to extinguish the fire before it could spread.

Fire crews responded and ensured the fire was completely out before leaving.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man, standing at medium height, has a slim build, and was wearing a brown long-sleeve shirt and dark pants. He appears somewhat disheveled.

“If not for the quick action of neighbors, this fire could have easily spread and caused significant damage,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with information on the incident to come forward and contact (250) 754-2345.
