BC launches online forestry map to allow for people to see proposed cutblocks

Share

The BC government has launched a new interactive map and online portal for people to be able to see and comment on proposed logging operations.

This new ‘Forest Operations Map’ is an online portal that will act as a resource for the public to be aware of proposed cutblocks and forestry roads throughout the province.

The aim of this new resource is to increase transparency with the public and allow those who would like to see certain areas protected the ability to have their voices heard before operations commence.

The Forest Operations Map includes:

  • A geographic map with the approximate locations of proposed cutblocks and roads
  • Approximate time periods timber harvesting and/or road construction is intended to take place
  • Identification of the company who will be logging the cutblock

Prior to this interactive map’s launch, members of the public mostly learned about proposed cutblocks and roads from media sources or from a district forestry office. From there they would submit comments by email or through Canada Post.

The Province notes that people can still do this, but now the portal will be an additional resource.
