Tragedy has struck the Shawnigan Lake area after a 17-year-old boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday morning.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP closed the Trans Canada Highway for several hours in both directions while they investigated the collision near Butterfield Road in Mill Bay.

The deceased was a grade 12 student who attended Frances Kelsey Secondary School located on Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road.

Staff at the school sent out a letter to the school community confirming that a senior student at the school was the victim in the crash.

In an email statement, BC Emergency Health Services said that two ambulances were dispatched to the scene; however, no patients were transported to the hospital.

The school, which closed early today due to the incident, said they would be making support services available to students and staff.

Photos from the scene show that the crash involved a pick-up truck and a sedan.

No other details were released.
