Donut panic: Two Victoria donut shops forego competitive attitudes and come to each others aid

Share

A sugar shortage across Canada and the United States has been impacting some local businesses’ ability to serve their customers.

Due to this sugar shortage, icing sugar has become a hot commodity in Victoria.

Two such victims of this shortage are local donut shops, Frickin’ Delights Donuts and Empire Donuts.

Last week, the owners of Frickin’ Delights, Mandy and Cory Woytkiw, turned to Facebook to let people know about how helpful and compassionate Empire Donuts owner Melanie Laverick had been.

In the post, they mentioned that some customers assume that there is some kind of rivalry between the donut shops in town, but that couldn’t be further from the reality of the situation.

In this icing sugar shortage, Laverick has unequivocally had Frickin’ Delights’ back and has shown that by coming through for them and picking up any extra icing sugar she can find for them.

Unlike most donuts, Frickin’ Delights is unique in that their vegan donut recipe requires a lot of icing sugar because they do not use granulated white sugar in the making of their products.

“Our recipe uses applesauce and brown sugar in the donut and icing sugar to make our fudge glazes,” wrote the Woytkiws in their Facebook post.

“In icing sugar alone, we go through 80 kgs in a week.”

They also mentioned that Laverick’s good will toward the fellow donut connoisseurs is far reaching and she will even  go out of her way to ensure they have what they need to operate during the shortage.

Last week alone, she picked up five 20 kilogram bags of icing sugar she found for Frickin’ Delights that she delivered for them.

In the face of adversity, rather than clawing over one another, Empire Donuts owner came to bat for Frickin’ Delights in a way that completely foregos the preconceived notion of competition within Victoria’s donut scene.

This has warmed the hearts of many who saw the post online.

Most people who commented have been expressing their joy to see people going out of their way to help people.
