While no one looks forward to a trip to the dentist, one Vancouver Island woman’s appointment turned into a great surprise after she realized she had won a $500,000 lottery prize.

When waiting for her appointment, Nanaimo resident Gurmail Sidhu realized that her Lotto Max ticket matched all four Extra numbers for July 5th’s draw.

“While I was at the mall to see the dentist, I decided to check my tickets,” Sidhu told the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). “I saw a lot of zeroes, and asked my son to look. I don’t have words to describe it.”

The 79-year-old woman came to Canada 40 years ago from India, and has lived in Terrace, Surrey, and now Nanaimo.

She came to the island to help her daughter raise her twin children, and plans to share her lucky ticket with her family.

“Sidhu said she is excited to share her winnings with her family, including her grandchildren, whom she loves to spend time with,” said the BCLC in a release.
