A second powerful 6.8 earthquake has just struck off Vancouver Island

A second powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 has just struck near the same area as an earlier one, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

This quake comes 37-minutes after the initial magnitude 6.6 quake at 10:39 pm. The second quake struck at 11:16 pm.

Tsunami warnings have not been issued for both earthquakes.

Several Victoria Buzz readers living in Port Hardy said they felt the second shake.

Two more earthquakes register

A third and fourth aftershock have occurred as of writing this publication. They had a magnitude of 6.5 and 4.9 respectively.  Both registered 223 km southwest of Port Hardy and in the same area as the first two.
