Victoria among BC communities to receive more electric buses and infrastructure

Share

BC Transit announced they will be distributing 66 new electric buses and providing additional electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to some cities in need of improvements.

Currently the electric buses are on order from two suppliers, Nova Bus and New Flyer, with funding coming from BC Transit as well as the Canadian government.

Along with all these buses, nine municipalities will be getting EV infrastructure upgrades.

The infrastructure upgrades will come in the form of 134 new electric bus charging points and will be installed over the next two years.

The cities receiving these upgrades will be Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, the Regional District of Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Whistler.

“Innovation in our public transit system helps us create a greener future for everyone,” said Rob Fleming, BC Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“As we start to electrify our transit fleet more people will be able to make cleaner transportation choices affordably. The communities of B.C. will soon be seeing new electrical infrastructure for their transit needs.”

BC Transit says that bus allocations of the 66 on order will be confirmed as the projects progress.

Buses will be delivered by mid-2026, according to BC Transit.

The funding for this endeavour was announced in 2023 and totals around $395.5 million.

These buses and infrastructure are being acquired in order to reduce BC Transit’s greenhouse gas emissions.
