Former View Royal mayor seeks Liberal nomination for next federal election

Long-time town councillor and former mayor of View Royal, David Screech has recently announced his intention to seek nomination for the Liberal Party of Canada in the next election.

He is vying for the Liberal candidacy in the Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke riding which was previously held by the Liberal Party’s Doug Kobayashi.

Currently, Kobayashi is serving his community as Mayor of Colwood.

According to Screech, Canada’s political landscape is brought on, in part, by misinformation and this was one of the catalysts which drove him to seek candidacy.

“The combination of my years in civic politics and my life as a small business owner/operator have enabled me to develop a deep understanding of the aspirations, concerns and hopes of people across our region,” said Screech.

“I am deeply concerned that Canada is at a crossroads where our values are being confronted and challenged. When misinformation, circulated through social media, is saying Canada is broken, I cannot sit idly by.”

He says he will try to represent the riding with a strong voice in Ottawa and that he believes the upcoming federal election as the most important in generations.

The Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke electoral district was formed in 2012 and has been held by the New Democratic Party since its inception.

That seat has been held by NDP MP Randal Garrison since it was created; however, Garrison announced last year that he is stepping down and former Sooke mayor, Maja Tait has stepped into the position of NDP candidate for the next election.

The upcoming federal election is slated to take place in October 2025.
