Traffic was delayed in Sidney on Tuesday morning after a semi truck pulled down a power line, tearing away part of a building in the process.
The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department was called at around 9:40 a.m. for a report of a vehicle colliding with a building on Second Street between Bevan Avenue and Beacon Avenue.
What happened, in fact, was that a tractor trailer got caught on a low-hanging hydro line, which pulled down a utility pole, as well as part of the building to which it was connected.
The driver stayed in the vehicle until emergency crews and BC Hydro could arrive as a live power line was arcing on top of the truck.
Traffic was closed for about 20 minutes, according to fire chief Brett Mikkelsen.
The scene was cleared shortly afterwards, with no injuries reported. Mikkelsen praised the smart thinking of both the driver and the public, who kept away at a safe distance.
“We’re happy it went smoothly,” Mikkelsen said.
