A 72-year-old woman in Nanaimo was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after being trapped under a vehicle upon falling off her bicycle.

At about 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 9th, in the area of Rutherford and Nelson Road, Nanaimo RCMP officers and seven bystanders pulled a full size sedan off woman who was pinned underneath it.

After she was pulled out from underneath the vehicle, she regained consciousness, and was taken to the hospital by paramedics where doctors treated her overnight for serious injuries.

According to bystanders, the woman was sitting on the side of the road next to her bike when, seconds later, the vehicle emerged from a driveway and ran her over.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man, has been cooperating with officers. The investigation is in its early stages, but RCMP have reason to believe that he may not have seen the woman before running her over.

“Our officers would like to extend a heartfelt thank you [to] the bystanders for their life saving efforts. Without their immediate assistance this incident may have ended tragically,” stated Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
