Left turn onto Carey Road from Highway 1 will be closed for good

Share

Commuters will want to take note if they’re coming along Douglas Street next week, as the southbound left turn onto Carey Road will be permanently closed as of Sunday, June 10.

The closure is part of the province’s Douglas Street priority bus lane project, which is expected to be completed in fall 2018.

The extended bus lane will run both directions from Fisgard Avenue to Tolmie Avenue.

Once complete, Carey Road will function as a right-in/right-out turn for northbound traffic.

The Saanich Road intersection, meanwhile, will get some enhanced safety upgrades, including two signalized turning lanes for southbound traffic along Douglas Street.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Douglas Street/Highway 1 corridor is one of the busiest commuter routes in the city.

The route currently supports as many as 1,700 vehicles per hour during peak travel times. BC Transit buses move 40% of the people taking this route during peak hours, while only making up 3% of the traffic.
