BC Transit’s new electric bus was spotted on a test run in Oak Bay

If you’ve seen this new BC Transit bus cruising around town recently, you may be excited to hear about the new, green route they’re planning to follow.

Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen certainly was, when he spotted the bus sporting a “100% Electric” sign. “The future is now!” reads his tweet on the subject.

According to BC Transit Communications Manager Jonathon Dyck, the electric bus driving around town is on a test run for a 6-month trial that began in April.

The bus itself and the charging station infrastructure to run it was provided to the crown corporation by BYD in order for BC Transit to test out these battery-operated electric vehicles first hand in Victoria.

At the moment, BC Transit is in the process of figuring out how far the bus can run under various circumstances, in order to test its range.

If all goes well, the next step will be to have the bus run regular service on certain routes – so BC Transit passengers could be riding the electric bus as early as later this summer!

The next step after that will be to remove the bus from revenue service and analyze reports of what needs to be improved in order for the company to roll out electric buses in BC in the future.
