B.C. government establishes new scholarship for Royal Roads students

Graduate students that pursue advanced degrees in science and technology at Royal Roads University will soon have one less financial barrier to worry about as the provincial government announced a new $180,000 scholarship fund on Tuesday.

“Graduate students at Royal Roads University are tackling real-world problems,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “They’re figuring out how we can be environmentally sustainable, how communities can be more inclusive and how technology can enhance learning. Giving them the support they need to follow their dreams builds a stronger B.C. for everyone.”

The merit-based scholarships will be administered by Royal Roads, and are part of a $12-million government investment announced last month. That investment will provide 800 graduate awards throughout the province to the end of 2020-21.

The scholarship fund will support awards of $15,000 each for Royal Roads students pursuing graduate degrees in research-intensive or professional graduate-degree programs. Royal Roads has approximately 3,500 students enrolled in graduate programs.

Maria Anderson, student representative on the Royal Roads University board of governors, said the scholarship sends a message to current and prospective graduate students that the work they’ve undertaken has value.

“For some, it will mean the difference between pursuing post-secondary education, or never having that chance,” she added.
