Good news: the Malahat is re-opening a second northbound lane in time for the long weekend. (Ministry of Transportation)

Travellers heading up island for the long weekend are going to have an easier time doing so as construction crews re-opened a second northbound lane on Highway 1 through the Malahat Village.

The lane was re-opened on Wednesday after construction crews made significant progress in excavating the rock necessary for widening the highway. The lane will stay open until Tuesday, May 22.

That’s not all: on holiday weekends, there will be two northbound lanes and one southbound lane from Friday afternoon through Monday evening for the rest of summer.

For non-holiday weekends, the second northbound lane will be open Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.

Drivers should still expect the odd delay here and there, especially during peak hours. They’re also reminded to observe the posted 60 km/h speed limit in construction zones.

Drive safe!
