There will be an emergency town hall on Trans Mountain this Friday

The federal government’s decision to purchase Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline this week has prompted a range of responses from across the country, including here in Victoria.

To focus that energy, MP Murray Rankin is hosting an emergency town hall at Victoria High School on Friday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m.

The federal government announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to purchase the Trans Mountain pipeline and infrastructure related to the expansion project for $4.5 billion.

“The Liberal government’s decision today to give $4.5 billion of taxpayers’ money to Texas oil company, Kinder Morgan, for the Trans Mountain pipeline is shameful and irresponsible,” said Rankin in response.

“It’s simple: Climate change leaders don’t spend $4.5 billion on pipelines.”

A protest against the pipeline is already taking place in Victoria on Thursday evening, but the town hall will allow for a discussion on the environmental, economic, and legal implications of the federal government buyout.

The location of the town hall has already changed twice, so keep an eye on the Facebook event up to the scheduled time.

All are welcome to the event, and refreshments will be served.
