City of Victoria launches BYOB video contest

Share

The City of Victoria has launched a BYO Bag video contest to help encourage Victorians to ditch their plastic bags ahead of the upcoming bag ban.

Entries will be sorted into two categories, Youth (18 and under) and All Ages. Two $1,000 prizes are up for grabs for aspiring filmmakers.

Three videos from each category will also be shortlisted to be entered into the People’s Choice category.

Entries need to be submitted before midnight on Wednesday, May 30. Voting for all three categories will take place in June.

Plastic bag ban to take effect in July

The city approved a ban on plastic checkout bags last December. A soft rollout of the ban will begin July 1 with stricter enforcement to follow in January 2019.

The use of small plastic bags for produce or meat products will still be allowed, but customers will be asked if they’d like to purchase paper or reusable bags at checkout.
