5 thing to do in and around Victoria today, Tuesday May 1st

Share

It’s the start of a new month, meaning new beginnings and new things to do!

Here are 5 things happening in and around Victoria today!

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre

What: An incredible high energy program that is enjoyable from beginning to end — for one night only at the Royal Theatre! Robert Battle’s Mass is inspired by Verdi’s Requiem, deconstructing the vocal chorus. Performed to John Mackey’s percussion score.
In Battle’s Ella, two dancers try to match the manic virtuosity of Ella Fitzgerald, as heard in her mind-blowing recording of ‘Airmail Special.’
Kyle Abraham’s Untitled America features haunting music and raw interviews with ex-convicts and their families; an unflinching look at the impact of the prison system on African-Americans.
The Winter in Lisbon by Billy Wilson is a “heartfelt tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, a riot of color and rhythm” (The New York Times), on the occasion of the centennial of the late, great jazz trumpeter and composer.
Where: Royal Theatre
805 Broughton Street
When: 8 pm – 10 pm
Cost: Get your tickets here!

The Clean House: A Surreal Comedy by Sarah Ruhl

What: This theatrical and wildly funny play is a quirky comedy centred on Matilde, a young Brazilian cleaning woman who hates to clean and would rather be a comedian. Matilde works for Lane, a sharp doctor who is perfectly satisfied with her structured life. Lane’s sister Virginia loves to clean and sets up her own deal with Matilde, hoping that Lane doesn’t catch on. But Lane’s attention is diverted when she discovers that her husband and co-worker, Charles, is leaving her for his patient, the older and vivacious Ana. The Clean House is a piece written in the genre of magical realism; it’s a comedy about cancer, death, and love that dares to laugh in the face of trauma and celebrates the beautiful chaos of a messy life.
