Motorcycle rider critically injured in Nanaimo crash

A motorcycle rider is in critical condition following a collision at an intersection in Nanaimo late Sunday.

According to RCMP, the crash occurred just before midnight at the intersection of Highway 19A and 107th Street.

A 2006 Pontiac Montana van travelling south was attempting to make a left from the old Island Highway onto 107th Street when it was struck broadside by a northbound 2009 Honda motorcycle driven by a 23-year-old man.

The van’s 43-year-old male driver and 41-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries but were left traumatized from the incident are being assisted by Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services.

Police believe alcohol and speed were “definitely contributing factors” with the motorcyclist.

Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash.

The 23-year-old motorcyclist was taken to Nanaimo Hospital with life-threatening injuries and then transferred to Victoria several hours later.

There were several witnesses to the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.
