Victoria councillors hesitant about bike lane plans for Cook Street Village

Share

It looks like public opinion has caught the ear of Victoria city councillors when it comes to the bike lane plans for Cook Street Village.

According to a Times Colonist report, there has been considerable resistance to the idea of bike lanes being built in the area.

Concerns about parking, loss of loading zones, and traffic congestion have been raised by business owners, residents, and other locals alike.

Current and future planning

At the moment, separate bike lanes are scheduled to be built in Cook Street Village in 2021-2022, but rising disquiet about the imminent construction has forced the city to look at other options.

Cyclists will still be incorporated into any new plans for the village. One proposed idea was to use a complete street concept, where cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles share the road equally.

These alternate ideas, if implemented, would be a complete backtrack of the city’s bike network plan which was approved in 2015.

Currently, the first phase of the network (a two-way bike lane on Pandora Ave) has been completed at a price tag of $3.42 million, while the second phase (a-two way bike lane on Fort Street) is currently under construction, costing approximately $3.27 million.
