Ogden Point attempts to ward off seagulls with new fake tree

Share

Many of us have had one or two unfortunate encounters with bird poop, but none come close to what an Ogden Point warehouse has been dealing with recently.

Seagull guano – thanks to its acidic properties – has been eating away at the roof of the building, according to John Briant, general manager of Western Stevedoring. It also smells terrible.

To combat the endless gull excrement, an artificial tree has been built, in hopes of attracting bald eagles.

Those eagles would – in theory – scare off the pesky seagulls.

Latest of Many Attempts

The fake tree is only the latest of many seagull-prevention tactics. Fake owls, a light deterrent, and sprinkler systems have all been installed, but none have had their desired effect.

After consulting with Jacques Sirois, the president of the Friends of Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, the tree has now been added to the mix.

Whether or not the eagles can make a dent in the gull population remains to be seen.
