Bayside Middle School in Brentwood has been placed on lockdown because of a suspicious person near or on the school ground.

The school has enacted its lockdown procedure as a precaution. All students are safe in the building.

Central Saanich police said they received a report from a staff member from the school at around 11:15 a.m., after students playing outside reported seeing a suspicious person on the school grounds with a possible weapon.

A K-9 unit is on the scene, along with the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team.

“Our Youth Resource Officer is in the school with the students and staff, and we are told unofficially all students are accounted for, and the building is secure,” CS police said in a statement.

Parents are asked to avoid the school while the lockdown is in place and to give officers space to complete their protocols.

“At this time, it is our understanding that parents are not able to pick up students as the building is in lockdown.”

2:30 pm update: Central Saanich Police say a Bayside Middle School student is receiving medical attention. No other students are affected and the school remains under lockdown. Parents on scene will be allowed in the school shortly.

2:40 pm update:  Lockdown at Bayside Middle School has now been lifted. Parents/guardians are asked to sign students out in the school’s cafeteria
