Sidney wins bid to host World Rowing Coastal Championships

Share

This fall, Sidney will play host to some of the worlds most skilled and powerful coastal rowers.

From October 11th – 14th 2018, the World Rowing Coastal Championships will inhabit the peninsula, giving Vancouver Islanders a chance to take in this action-packed adventure sport in all its glory.

While Olympic-style rowing takes place on flat, calm water and is restricted to lanes, coastal rowing challenges participants with wavy, windy conditions, and has them navigating buoys, encouraging aggressive turns and fierce competition as they jockey for first position.

The event will be free for all spectators, and organizers are hoping sizeable crowds come to take in the action. Last year, over 600 rowers from 30 nations participated in the event.

Coastal Rowing history to be made with a few firsts

Sidney’s bid for the World Coastal Rowing Championships will offer a few firsts for the Coastal Rowing world, namely, the first Championship held in North America. The Championship has populated South America once and Europe on numerous occasions, most recently being hosted in France.

Obviously, it will also be its first time in Canada, after overwhelming support from coastal rowers across the nation.

The event will also mark the first occasion the race will have a beach start, adding another dimension to an already thrilling spectacle.
