Last week, the unveiling of the 2018 BC Budget brought with it some unpleasant news.
A 2 cent per litre increase to gas tax was announced, and will being taking effect on April 1st, 2018 – and now we know what it’s going towards.
According to a press release from the Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC), this tax increase will be used to fund a much needed (and long awaited) service expansion to the Regional Transit System.
Meant specifically to aid transit
The VRTC has been lobbying for this 2 cent per litre tax increase since 2013 as a way to fund improvements to the transit system.
Victoria has not had a gas tax increase in 10 years, and this move will raise about $7 million per year to aid transit.
